Dr.
Peter Van de Kamp, director of the
Spoul Observatory
and professor of
astronomy at Swarthmore
College
in Pennsylvania,
takes his turn
at the telescope to continue
the 24-year study of Barnard's
Star B, the nearest star visible
in the northern hemisphere.
Dr.Van de Kamp, a teaching
scientist at a small college and
his team of observers and
technicians, discovered
what they believed to be
the first planet found outside
our solar system.
They established the existence
of this "invisible" planet by
measuring the extremely
small variations it produced
in the path of Barnard's Star.
Dr.Van de Kamp's conclusions
have been challenged by other
astronomers who tried and failed
to duplicate his findings.
